Monday morning started out normal enough in Echo Valley, but upon arriving to staff meeting it quickly lost all hope of normality.
I’m not really sure why I still have expectations of a “normal” day at camp. I don’t think I even know what that would look like, but that’s part of what makes LLYC so awesome! It’s controlled chaos and we love spontaneity!
As I walked into staff meeting it was obvious that something just wasn’t quite right. Then it started to dawn on me – Central Staff had all switched places! We’re talking they went all out and even dressed up like each other!
The night before they had drawn names out of a hat to see whom they would switch with, and for the entire day they would be taking over each other’s jobs.
Let me just say, Monday was quite possibly the most unorganized day I have ever experienced. We had quite a few mishaps and learned just how clueless we were as to what the people working along side us do all day.
Thinking back on the events of that day I can’t help but think of the body of Christ. We all have different talents that the person next to us might not have. One person might do the job of the eyes and the other may do the job of the hands, but the eyes cannot do the job of the hands. At the same time, the hands cannot properly do their work if the eyes are not present to do theirs. Each job is so important and desperately needed to make camp run like a finely tuned machine.
I think many times we downsize what God is doing through us. Each person in this camp is in his or her specific position for a reason. Making dinner for hundreds of people may seem easy to the cooks, but a Program Crew Boss might not know flour from sugar.
I think we learned a lot as a camp through that little switcheroo. We’ve gained a new respect for not only other people’s jobs, but also our own. Alone we are just pieces of the body, but together we are Laity Lodge Youth Camp.
