Counting Down to Haiti…Some Final Instructions!
Dear Haiti Mission Team and Parents,
Can you believe it? Only 22 days until we meet at Laity Lodge and begin this mission! I am so excited about this team and our opportunity to experience Haiti together.
Here are a few last-minute details:
- Please see your local family doctor to get your anti-malarial prescription, and while you are there, make sure you are current on tetanus.
- A physician connected to one of our team members strongly suggested each person ask about medication (shots?) for Yellow Fever. Please talk to your family physician about this.
- Hopefully, by now, you have your passport in hand. Please bring it with you and a copy of it for our files.
- We have purchased a medical policy for each participant on this trip. We will give parents a copy of this policy at the orientation.
- If you have not already done so, please go to www.llyc.org/haiti and look at the Packing List. The pass code is haiti2010. The Packing List can be found under the Checklist link.
- You will also need to go to the website and logon to the Parent Portal, enter your email address and password to fill out the Medical Information/Releases section, download the Health Form for your physical, and complete any other tasks necessary.
- Please pack as light as possible because we will distribute additional supplies at the packing party for each person to carry.
- Remember, one checked bag and one carry-on. We strongly recommend packing in a strong duffel bag rather than a suitcase. The checked bag is limited to 50 pounds. Checked baggage weighing over 50 lbs/23 kgs but not more than 70 lbs/32 kgs will be charged at the rate of $50 per piece. Checked baggage which is larger than 62 in/157 cm will be charged at the rate of $150 per piece.
- Pack your outfits in one- or two-gallon Ziploc bags, sit on them to take the air out, and this will keep everything dry if we encounter rain.
- Arrival time on Friday, July 2, is 3:00 p.m. Drive straight to Laity Lodge, the adult retreat center. Please reply to Diane Henry at 830-792-1215 or diane@llyc.org by Monday, June 28, and let us know how many family members will be there for dinner and overnight.
- We will have a satellite phone on this trip that will allow incoming and outgoing texts and phone calls. We will give you that phone number at the orientation.
- Pack a twin-sized air mattress for sleeping. Knowing the climate, we recommend twin sheets instead of a heavy, bulky sleeping bag.
- Fund-raising efforts have been a huge success. Thank you for participating in this effort.
If you have questions, please call me at 830-792-1226 or email me at kmayne@llyc.org.
Serving together,
Kevin Mayne
