How many summers did you spend in the Canyon?
I thought it was 13, but when I try to recall each summer, I am coming up with 11 total; 2 Singing Hills, 5 at Echo, 1 work crew, 1 CIT (Counselor in Training) and 2 as a Cook.
Do you have a favorite camp memory?
There are so many “favorite” camp memories to pick, ranging from Group Games (Go, Tejas!) to Cross Talk. Then there was the old gravy train slide, sneaking out as a cabin on “missions,” running to Blue Hole, Cabin 4 traditions like the Men without Women Campout and Howling at the moon! All said, I’d say that my favorite memory is when Susie Vandever gave me a Bible, which was actually meant to be a gift for her one summer from her family. Susie and I had many talks, and she knew I was longing for a closer relationship with the Lord, but I was struggling while in college. I still think of that summer, and I still have that Bible and read it now more than ever. Thanks again, Susie!
What do you miss most about your summers at camp?
Besides my youth, I miss being able to shut off the outside world, be myself, and be still in God’s beautiful creation. I miss the closeness and intimacy you feel with the Lord, all while having a blast and building lifelong relationships.
How does LLYC still impact your life today?
For one, there is the fact that I run into someone I know from camp on a regular basis, and I really appreciate the immediate bond that we share. I’m now blessed to be getting back involved with LLYC by going back with my family to LLFC and sharing my favorite place on Earth with them. We look forward to many wonderful memories to come at Family Camp, and I look forward to my kids becoming campers and experiencing LLYC for themselves.
What are you up to these days?
Happily married to Kristen Bumgardner Debenport and very proud father of two children: James, who is 5, and Vivian, who is 3. We reside in Houston, Texas and are members of Christ the King Presbyterian Church. I’m in the Excess and Surplus Lines insurance industry and have been for the past 13 years. I have a passion for what I do, which is assisting independent insurance agents build commercial insurance programs for construction-, energy-, and marine-related businesses that have catastrophic exposures. My FAVORITE job is being a husband and a father and with God’s help, I can lead them to have a relationship with the Lord. And I’m thrilled that LLFC is now a part of my family’s life!
