“For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you.”
Jeremiah 29:11
In a world full of distractions and pressures, Laity Lodge Youth Camp is a sanctuary where young people connect to what truly matters. Echo Valley and Singing Hills aren’t your typical summer camps—they’re incubators for personal growth, spiritual depth, and a sense of belonging that many young people don’t even realize they crave.
Having worked in the summer camp industry for over 20 years, I can say without hesitation that “camp” is my passion. A childhood friend recently reminded me that I now work at the very camp we attended as kids. I had forgotten! My first camping experience was here at one of the H. E. Butt Foundation Camps with the small church I grew up in. This is where I first fell in love with camping. How could I forget? As they say, “God has a plan,” and it’s a sweet moment when you recognize His fingerprints as that plan unfolds.
This summer, I saw the impact of LLYC firsthand. Parents who were once campers themselves, now returning to drop off their own kids—for the 6th, 7th, or 8th time. These families don’t just trust LLYC; they cherish it. For many, camp is an extension of their childhood, a place that shaped and transformed them into who they are today.
The LLYC community reflects the larger body of Christ. Here, campers flourish in an environment of trust and love, forming authentic relationships that often last a lifetime. In a world dominated by digital interactions, they experience the joy of face-to-face connection.
They also engage in activities that challenge them physically and mentally—whether it’s the wonderfully chaotic group games or creative arts featured in Roundup. These experiences build confidence, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment.
As summer 2024 came to an end, I walked alone in the Frio and reflected on my first summer as Echo Valley Director. I replayed great moments in my mind, especially those unforgettable river walks to Blue Hole. I prayed for all the campers while their laughter was still fresh in my head.
I was overwhelmed by the joy of camp. Surrounded by tall canyon walls, water splashing with every step, I forget that thousands of others have hiked this hike, right through this river. Thousands of others were drawn closer to the Creator of it all.
LLYC guides campers toward their Creator. We explore the Bible and themes of love, grace, and purpose. We sing worship songs that echo off the walls of the Canyon. We hike three miles to the clearest water you’ve ever seen at Blue Hole. We practice together the journey toward wholeness.
