I’ve been thinking about stewardship lately. Stewardship is one of the H. E. Butt Foundation’s values. We define stewardship as “the practice of taking care of everything that is entrusted to us.”
The planning process for the summer camp season was different than usual this year. In response to last summer’s flood on the Guadalupe River, we put in a lot of extra work to ensure we abide by the new state laws and offer the safest camp experience possible.
Throughout the planning process, the Camping Programs team certainly exemplified stewardship. We are humbled by the trust that so many families have in us, as you eagerly drop off your campers to experience LLYC or pack your cars with the family gear needed for your time at LLFC. That trust must be stewarded.
With the summer camping season in full swing, the Canyon is full of families and Youth Camp campers. As I spend time each day at Singing Hills, Echo Valley, and Headwaters, I am reminded of all that has been entrusted to us, and I am proud of the way in which our staff exemplifies great stewardship. Our counselors are intentionally spending time with campers to ensure that they feel valued and cared for. Our cooks are working hard to prepare food that nourishes campers and staff for the fun and work that the day offers. Our program crews and work crews are loving others by picking up garbage and cleaning kitchens. We are working hard to take care of all that has been confided in us, including our campers and your families.
The work of stewardship is rarely easy work. To care for all that is charged to us is often difficult. It takes effort. It takes endurance. In Hebrews 12:1-2, Scripture encourages Christ followers to steward “the race” that has been entrusted to them.
I count myself fortunate to watch as people actively run with endurance the race marked out for them here in the Frio Canyon this summer. Thanks for trusting us.
